Brief history

St. George’s Anglican Church opened in 1955 to serve the needs of Windsor Park and the University of Alberta. The community of Windsor Park all helped to build this church.

St. George’s was identified in 2008 by the City of Edmonton Historic Resource Management Program for the church’s historical significance. It is architecturally significant as it proves to be an excellent example of an ecclesiastical version of the International Style leading to Early Modernism. Over 2000 buildings were considered.

The Church is historically significant for its association with the expansion of the city and the development of the upscale residential neighborhood of Windsor Park after World War II.

Our building has been dubbed the “Bird Cage” due to its unique belfry. The church has several unique and defining features including a low-slope pitched roof over the sanctuary, an angled entrance with a long canopy and a beautiful entrance embellished by wood doors.
